Could anyone share how their college uses Facebook for their Student Services? Our Administration has given me the task of presenting to the VPs the advantages/disadvantages of Facebook for the campus and more specifically for Student Services.  I was wondering about the differences between a Business/Organizations and Groups.
I have been using Facebook for a while now (Thanks Tom) and while it has proven to be a great tool for SA I am not sure how to pitch it for other areas of our college.  Any comments would be welcomed.

Oregon State University has a lot of Facebook Pages for various student services. I would definitely recommend that you use a Page instead of a group as Pages offer up more functionality.

http://www.facebook.com/newstudents - OSU New Student Programs
http://www.facebook.com/HHS.Advising - the academic advising page for the college where I advise.
http://www.facebook.com/OSU.HHS - a general page for the College of Health and Human Sciences at OSU.

On the HHS pages, I am importing Twitter posts, calendar event data and blog posts via RSS. I think that the best "pitch" is to relay back to the VP's that this is an element of your overall communication and service strategy. You are literally going to where a lot of students "are".

My school is using the Facebook to crate events for our students. I think the students are really integrated each other on the Facebook. They are post pictures and videos on my school page. They are sharing all the information. Student affairs has much more power to work with students.

Hi Linda - Here's a blog that someone wrote highlighting four colleges and how they are integrating social media...aka social tools of the web. I think there is a lot of value in there. I'll have more later, but for now this should give you a start with reading.

Virginia Commonwealth University has different groups for areas of interest (i.e. Alumni, Athletics, Admissions) and for the different schools/colleges (i.e. Humanities and Sciences, Arts, Business, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc.) Most of our individual programs, especially within the Arts, are starting to create groups for each department (i.e. Music, Theatre, etc.--Music is doing a GREAT job of populating their group!) For a link to each group, head here: http://www.socialmedia.vcu.edu/

We've aggregated a lot of this information on our institution's social networking website:
